  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 12 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Black Magic Cake:

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened baking cocoa
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup strong coffee
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened baking cocoa
  • Pinch of salt

For the Chocolate Glaze:

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened baking cocoa
  • 1 tablespoon warm water
  • 1 tablespoon coffee-flavored liqueur
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Prepare Your Workspace: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans with non-stick cooking spray and line bottoms with parchment paper.
  • Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined. Create a well in the center.
  • Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, coffee, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour this mixture into the well of dry ingredients.
  • Create the Batter: Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 1-2 minutes until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. The consistency should be relatively thin.
  • Bake to Perfection: Divide the batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool and Prepare: Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10-15 minutes, then remove and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Make Cream Cheese Frosting: Beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until fluffy. Gradually incorporate powdered sugar, cocoa, and salt until smooth and creamy.

  • Create Chocolate Glaze: Melt butter in a saucepan, then stir in cocoa, water, and liqueur. Remove from heat and beat in powdered sugar until smooth.
